Mercedes steering box rebuild fail
Переглядів 15 тис.11 років тому
This is a box rebuilt with "new gears", but there is play in the piston assembly. In this movie, the piston is locked from moving with the proper MB tool, but the input shaft still has play. This box will be returned to the rebuilder.

1967 Mercedes 300SEL runs for the first time in 20+ years
Переглядів 3,1 тис.12 років тому
This M189 has been sitting since the late 1980s. With a new fuel tank and lines, some careful preparations, and a few minutes of cranking, it runs! It's a bit rough still, but with some running, tuning, and a bunch of new parts, it will run nicely.
Turning a Mercedes M189 by hand - 1967 300SEL
Переглядів 1,8 тис.12 років тому
Visit www.JaimeKop.com for more about the restoration of this car and engine. This suspenseful movie shows a Mercedes Benz M189 engine in a 1967 300SEL turning for the first time in 20 years. It was turned by inserting a long 7mm allen wrench into the holes on the outside of the vibration damper from below. It turned surprisingly easy. The cylinders were soaked for two weeks then given some oil.

      Might be a little late but literally just hammer a flathead in there and use vice grips or something to turn it until it breaks the ignition and goes into position. Also worth seeing if the key that comes with the replacement ignition will turn the old one. Most of these old benz ignitions are so worn they'll take each other's keys with some wiggling.

    Hello Jaime, I have a 1968 mercedes with the same gear shift, do you shift to the 4th gear from the beginning and then you accelerate from 0 to 60 using the gas pedal only(without shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd...)

    • @jaimekop
      @jaimekop 2 роки тому

      The behavior is different depending on which position you select on the shifter. With 4 or 3 and pressing the kick down switch from a stop, you should get first gear, and early shift to second, then up to redline and shift to third. If you select position 2, the transmission will start in first and run to redline before shifting to second… this is the maximum acceleration but also the most violent! Normally I leave it in 4 for most starts.

    Go figure, the best video explanation, of all the videos and you have the least views. One question I have: If my key got stuck all of a sudden, after being parked for a couple years, what is the best way to approach this? Should I try to force the key to turn? Put some WD40? i am just looking for best guess answeres, I know you all will say this "depends"

    • @jaimekopchinski4603
      @jaimekopchinski4603 3 роки тому

      I'm glad you found it useful! First, be sure the key is correct! Two things can happen: first the lock cylinder can fail. If you continue to jiggle the key (for several minutes even) you may be able to get it to turn. If it does turn, immediately remove the cylinder! Second failure which can keep the key from turning is the steering lock. If this fails, you have little hope. You need to drill out the pin holding it to the steering column. Not a terrible job with an angle grinder. New steering locks and lock cylinders keyed to the VIN are available new from Mercedes. Good luck.

      @@jaimekopchinski4603 YOU DA MAN ! I actually think I might have had the wrong key! I have two W123 and one W124 and I think I got them mixed up. I think a bit of Graphite Lubricant might do the trick if I did infact have the right key. But yeah, they keys got mixed up, but it is so good to know the tumbler can come out so easily. These cars are going to last forever, better to keep em maintained.

      Dry graphite lube if the key still can turn. But replace it before it doesn't otherwise you can get stranded.

    For those wondering if this was the correct procedure (right from the owners manual): Turn key in steering lock to position "2" charge indicator and preglow indicator lamp must come on. The preglow process starts. When the preglow indicator goes out, the engine is ready for starting. _Ambient Temperature below 0° C/+ 32° F:_ Depress accelerator to the floor. Turn key in steering lock clockwise to the stop. Release key only when the engine is firing regularly and back off accelerator slowly. *Do not interrupt the starting process.* If the engine is very cold, it is possible that it will fail to start on subsequent attempts. At ambient temperatures of less than - 18° C/0° F, depress accelerator three times prior to starting. indicator and preglow

    What's the point of turning the starter for so long? Only expose the starter and battery wear. Press hard the gas pedal on a cold diesel engine, after starting,is guaranteed the risk of damage to the engine crankshaft.

    what other preparations did you do prior to trying to start it? picking up a 300se thats been sitting since the 80's, ran when parked... I was going to pull the plugs and oil the cylinders down, change all the fluids prior to attempting. Should I worry about pulling the injection pump apart to clean it out or just flush with fuel?

    • @jaimekop
      @jaimekop 6 років тому

      I flush it with Acetone to get out all of the varnish from old gasoline. In the car shown in this video, it worked very well. I've actually driven the car a few thousand miles now and it runs excellent. But I also have another car in very bad condition that was left outside. I'm trying to start it right now, but 4 of the 6 pistons in the injection pump are stuck, even after a few weeks of soaking. You can see this by removing the cover plate on the side of the pump. Hopefully it'll free up. Everything you mentioned is a good idea, and be sure you replace the fuel filter as well. I like to crank the engine with no plugs in it to build oil pressure before trying to start it as well.

    4 yrs late, so this is for others. Don't state if you tried the gearbox in the car. Perhaps just a "doesn't seem right" on the bench. I resealed a 1965 Dodge gearbox (looks similar inside). It still had play in the input shaft on the bench (or w/ engine off), but operated very smoothly with no play under hydraulic pressure. It seems that play is normal in the way the box operates. As you turn the input shaft, it moves slightly to open hydraulic passages so pressure is applied to the piston to cause it to follow your motion. You are evaluating it as one would a manual gearbox. I would hate to be a rebuilder and have to deal with M-B owners (I am one, but not so fussy).

  • @Mercmad
    @Mercmad 9 років тому

    Hi jamie, how did you go with this steering box?Did they give you another? I would have thought the only problem was that the hole where the lock bolt tightens down was worn a bit large .Possibly the result of having been used a few times in the past.
